I woke up today to the first measurable snowfall of the season. About 2-3" of the white stuff, a true winter wonderland outside. Temps were warm, right around 30* and I had a 10 miler on the schedule. This is the longest that I've run in months. The plan was to run it at 70% of max.
Prior to heading out, I set the watch to 75%. I didn't want to be frustrated with the run and I thought that running in fresh snow would be a bit harder than normal. I immediately settled into a comfortable pace and the miles just clicked by. Very few people were out and I had the running paths to myself. I think I managed to make it thru 8 miles before the HRM ever alerted me to a rise in my HR. It was also about that time when my butt and legs started feeling the strain. Running in snow tends to use a few different muscles than are normally used. Even when the alerts went off, a little backing off on the pace shut them up. I never once had to walk. Not once.
I believe I finished 10.13 miles in 1:51, just over an 11 mpm pace. Slow, but I'm always a bit slower running in snow. I feel good. Again, not wiped out by running a longer distance or harder run. Yes, I'd like to see the pace dropping faster, but I'm happy to be feeling good when I run.
